## Overview

Typographer presents a design system built around the confident pairing of classical serif typography with utilitarian sans-serif structure. The visual identity serves a font discovery and subscription platform, where the interface itself demonstrates typographic sophistication. The system alternates between stark, editorial minimalism and moments of expressive color—particularly in photographic sections where vibrant orange and green print specimens create visual energy against dark overlays.

The architecture relies on a near-black and white foundation with extremely limited chromatic intervention. Blue appears as a single functional accent, most notably in the sign-up page's large typographic specimen panel. The overall impression is of a tool made by designers for designers: restrained when organizing information, bold when celebrating type itself. Content density remains moderate, with generous whitespace surrounding text blocks and clear hierarchical separation between display, body, and label scales.

## Colors

The palette is intentionally austere, deriving visual interest from typography and photography rather than color complexity. Black serves as the primary ink and surface for interactive elements, while white provides the dominant canvas. A small set of grays handles structural borders and secondary text. The single saturated accent, a deep blue, appears in product marketing moments.

| token | value | use |
|---|---|---|
| ink | #000000 | Primary text, button fills, navigation borders, footer rules |
| canvas | #FFFFFF | Page background, inverted text on dark surfaces, button text on black |
| muted-ink | #717171 | Secondary text, captions, legal copy |
| subtle-surface | #F9F9F9 | Footer background, alternate section grounds |
| soft-surface | #F0F0F8 | Light tint surfaces, subtle differentiation |
| border-light | #E8E8E8 | Hairline dividers, input borders in light mode |
| border-input | #B0D2E2 | Focused or active input states |
| search-field | #E8E8E8 | Search input background in navigation |
| accent-blue | #173FC5 | Marketing accent, typographic specimen panels |

The system operates primarily in a light mode with black text on white. Dark surfaces appear as overlays on photography or as inverted button states, always using pure black rather than softened dark grays. The blue accent is reserved for product storytelling and does not appear in functional UI elements like validation states or links. Photographic sections introduce warm oranges and greens through imagery, but these remain image-native rather than interface colors.

## Typography

Four type families establish the typographic hierarchy. Mania, a classical serif with light and semibold weights, handles all display and headline material; the exact font files include Mania-300 for light and Mania-600 for semibold. Synergy, a clean sans-serif in regular and medium weights, manages body text, navigation, labels, and interface elements. Config Mono provides the search input with a technical, measured character appropriate for font-name lookup. Applesystem appears as a system fallback at 14px for minor interface elements.

| token | family | size | weight | leading | tracking | use |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---|
| hero-display | Mania | 5.875rem | 300 | 0.9 | -0.04em | Homepage hero headlines, large statement text |
| section-display | Mania | 3.25rem | 300 | 1.2 | -0.01em | Section headings, about page titles |
| medium-display | Mania | 2.25rem | 400 | 1.2 | normal | Subsection headings, pricing card titles |
| body | Synergy | 1rem | 400 | 1.5 | normal | Paragraphs, descriptions, general content |
| body-large | Synergy | 1.125rem | 400 | 1.3 | normal | Lead paragraphs, emphasized body copy |
| label | Synergy | 0.8125rem | 500 | 1 | 0.04em | Buttons, navigation labels, uppercase tags |
| navigation | Synergy | 1rem | 400 | 1.5 | normal | Primary navigation, footer links |
| mono-input | Config Mono | 0.875rem | 400 | 1 | normal | Search field, technical inputs |

Mania's light weight at large sizes creates an elegant, airy display quality with tight negative letterspacing that prevents looseness. The semibold weight appears at smaller display sizes for structural headings. Synergy maintains consistent 16px body size with slight variations in line height depending on context—tighter for labels, more generous for reading paragraphs. Config Mono's 14px size keeps search inputs compact and scannable. Applesystem serves as a fallback for minor UI chrome at 14px.

Verify licensing for these families before production use.

## Layout

The layout system employs a centered content model with variable max-width constraints depending on section purpose. Navigation spans full width with internal padding. Main content sections center with generous side margins, creating a reading-column effect on large viewports. The spacing scale uses a 2px base unit, with key structural values at 8px, 16px, 32px, 60px, and 120px.

Navigation sits at the top with a single-pixel bottom border in black, establishing the primary horizontal rule. The nav contains logo, text links, a search field, and auth actions arranged horizontally. Search receives distinctive treatment with a light gray background and monospace typography, visually separating it from navigation links.

Content sections use substantial vertical padding—120px top and 90px bottom for major homepage sections, reducing to 80px top and 54px bottom for secondary content. Horizontal margins vary: 248px side margins for centered narrative sections, 532px for very narrow focused content, and 80px for wider grid layouts. This variable constraint system allows some sections to breathe while others maintain tight reading measure.

The footer inverts the spacing logic: full-width subtle background with 32px horizontal padding, 64px gap between content clusters, and 80px top padding before copyright text. A single top border in black separates footer from content.

## Visual language

The visual language balances editorial restraint with typographic exuberance. The core interface is almost ascetic—black text, white ground, single-pixel rules, zero border radius on functional elements. Against this neutral field, large serif display type becomes the primary visual event. Headlines are allowed substantial size, often exceeding comfortable reading scale to celebrate letterforms themselves.

Photographic sections introduce controlled chaos: vibrant print specimens with oranges, greens, and deep blacks create saturated moments that break the monochrome system. Pricing cards and promotional overlays use dark translucent backgrounds that let photography show through while maintaining text legibility. This layering—photography, dark overlay, white text, thin rules—creates depth without shadow effects.

Iconography and indicators remain minimal. Checkmarks in feature lists use simple SVG marks. The logo combines a geometric mark with wordmark in sans-serif. No decorative elements, gradients, or animated accents appear in the functional interface. The design trusts type size, weight, and spacing to create hierarchy rather than color or ornament.

## Components

### Navigation

The navigation bar spans full width with white background and a single black bottom border. Left side contains the Typographer logo mark and wordmark. Center holds text links in Synergy regular with 16px padding. The search field occupies a distinct gray region with Config Mono input at 14px, padded left to accommodate a search icon. Right side contains "Log In" text link and "Sign Up" button with inverted black fill and white text.

- Anatomy: logo, primary links, search input, auth actions
- Surface: white background, black bottom border
- Typography: navigation token for links, mono-input for search
- Spacing: 8px vertical padding on links, 16px horizontal; search has 6.4px vertical and 30px left padding
- Composition: horizontal flex with space-between logic

### Button

Two primary button variants exist. The primary button uses black fill with white text, 16px padding, and zero border radius. The secondary/outline variant uses white fill with black text and a 1px black border. A smaller compact version uses 8px vertical and 12px horizontal padding for dense layouts.

- Anatomy: text label, optional icon with 12px gap
- Surface: black or white fill, 1px border on secondary
- Typography: label token, uppercase styling with letterspacing
- Spacing: 16px standard padding, 8px/12px compact variant
- States: inverted colors for primary, solid border for secondary

### Pricing Card

Pricing cards appear as dark translucent panels overlaid on photography. Each card contains a tier name in medium-display serif, price in large serif figures, a primary action button in white fill, and a feature checklist with checkmark icons. Cards are separated by thin white borders.

- Anatomy: tier title, price block, action button, feature list
- Surface: rgba(0,0,0,0.85) background, white text, white 1px borders
- Typography: medium-display for titles, body for features
- Spacing: internal padding approximately 20px
- Composition: three-column grid on desktop, equal width

### Feature List

Feature lists use simple checkmark icons followed by text in Synergy regular. Items stack vertically with 8px gap between rows. Nested sub-features indent with additional left padding.

- Anatomy: icon, text label
- Typography: body token
- Spacing: 8px row gap, 20px left padding for nested items
- Composition: vertical stack, left-aligned

### Form Input

Text inputs use white background, 1px border in light gray, and 12px internal padding. Focus states likely shift border to the blue accent. Email capture on the sign-up page uses full-width input with 16px top margin to the submit button.

- Anatomy: input field, label, submit button
- Surface: white fill, light border
- Typography: body token for input text
- Spacing: 12px padding, 16px margin to button

### Footer

The footer uses a subtle gray background with black text. Content arranges in a multi-column link grid: logo and primary navigation in first column, secondary actions in second, legal links in third. Copyright sits below with muted-ink color.

- Anatomy: logo, link columns, copyright
- Surface: subtle-surface background, black top border
- Typography: navigation token for links, body for copyright
- Spacing: 32px horizontal padding, 64px column gap, 80px top padding

## Responsive behavior

The design shows a desktop-first approach with substantial fixed margins that would require reduction on smaller viewports. The three-column pricing card grid should stack vertically on narrow screens, with cards becoming full-width. The navigation search field likely collapses to an icon or moves below the fold on mobile.

The large serif headlines, particularly the 94px hero size, should scale down proportionally—targeting approximately 52px on tablet and 36px on mobile to maintain line length control. The foundry directory grid in the about section, currently three columns, should reflow to two columns then single column.

Button touch targets should maintain minimum 44px height regardless of viewport. The sign-up page's split layout requires vertical stacking, with the typographic specimen panel becoming a header region above the form.

## Practical implementation guidance

### Preserve
- The stark black-and-white foundation with single-pixel rules
- Mania serif for all display type, particularly the light weight at large sizes
- Generous section spacing (120px/90px) for major content breaks
- The search field's distinct gray background and monospace typography
- Dark translucent overlays on photographic sections for pricing and promotion

### Avoid
- Adding border radius to functional elements—the system uses sharp corners throughout
- Introducing additional accent colors beyond the single blue
- Reducing contrast below pure black on white for body text
- Using Mania for body copy or small labels—it is reserved for display
- Shadow effects for depth; rely on layering and photography instead

### Recommended build order
1. Establish the type system with Mania and Synergy loaded at all weights
2. Build the navigation with exact border and spacing values
3. Implement the hero section with large serif display and centered content constraints
4. Create button components in both fill and outline variants
5. Add the about section with variable margin constraints
6. Build the pricing overlay with dark translucent cards on photography
7. Implement the footer with multi-column link grid

### Accessibility
- Ensure the search field's light gray background maintains 4.5:1 contrast with black text
- Dark overlay cards on photography must maintain 4.5:1 for white text; test against the lightest photographic areas
- Zero border radius on interactive elements does not affect accessibility, but ensure focus indicators are clearly visible
- Large serif headlines at light weights may appear faint; verify weight 300 renders clearly at all target sizes
- Form inputs require visible focus states; use the accent blue for focus rings

## Scope note

This guide covers the homepage, about section, pricing presentation, sign-up flow, and footer as visible in the supplied captures. Mobile layouts, hover and focus states, loading indicators, error handling, and account dashboard interfaces are not represented. The Mania family is delivered as Mania-300, Mania-600, and Mania-Regular files; implementers should map these to the appropriate weight axes. Applesystem appears as a system fallback and does not require web font loading.
